Target rifle shooting using the .22 rimfire smallbore cartridge is a popular sport in the county, with affiliated clubs competing in the county-run winter and summer postal leagues (for teams of four) and pairs competitions. Additionally ladies and veterans competitions also take place. The even more enthusiastic shooter can take part in local leagues, such as Rutland and Midland leagues, as well as nationally based competitions

Most clubs are based indoors, with the standard distance being 25 yards, and the sport can be practised in all weathers. Smallbore is about honing personal skills, such as developing calmness, mental and physical application and self-discipline. It is truly a sport for all – whether able or disabled, and most clubs are readily accessed at ground level by those less firm of foot. Shooting at 50 and 100 metre distances is also held outdoors at one of the county's affiliated clubs.

A few individuals shoot at the annual national championships at Bisley in August, and we currently have one international smallbore shot. For most, however, this is a low- key sport, with the emphasis just as much on conviviality as competition.

Smallbore is a relatively cheap shooting discipline, and equipment is usually borrowed initially from the club. Once a probationary period has been completed with the club, the new member can apply for a firearm certificate and, on approval, purchase a good quality target rifle for in the region of £200 - £300. Even these are high precision rifles, capable of grouping to c. 5 mm at 25 yards.
