Fullbore Rifle Shooting
In the county fullbore shooting is a popular shooting discipline, in which
7.62 mm calibre target rifles are used at ranges between 300 and 1000 yards.
Match Rifle, a more specialized version of fullbore shooting involving the
use of telescopic sights and heavy-grain bullets, is held at between 1000
to 1200 yards.
This is an outdoor sport and mainly carried out in the warmer months between
April and September. The sport caters for a wide range of abilities and equipment,
with a number of local (East Midlands) ranges offering facilities for this
type of shooting. Most county and national level competitions are held either
at the National Rifle Association headquarters in Bisley, Surrey or at the
Midland Rifle Association's range near Tamworth. In the last 25 years the
County Team has been the strongest in the Midlands, and has also achieved
success at national level a number of times, although recently our crown
has begun to slip.
A small number of the County Association's affiliated clubs specialize
in this discipline, these being Langar, Old Nottinghamians, East Bridgeford
and, in Leicestershire, Kegworth and Sutton. Langar Rifle Club has been ranked
highly in a number of national competitions in the last three years, and
can rightly claim a place in the top dozen clubs in the country.
The Association can boast a number of shooters who have represented their
country, the National Rifle Association or Great Britain at home and on overseas
tours. These include a recent Great Britain Captain and two Commonwealth
Games medallists. Fullbore is therefore one of the County's stronger shooting
disciplines.
Although the equipment is specialized it is available to fit most pockets.
The sport offers and enormous challenge – one of skill in marksmanship and
judgement of the elements such as wind, and considerable satisfaction from
achievement. Anyone interested please contact me (Mark Shaw) on 0115 9363483.
