Bisley 2004
The feel of the Imperial Meeting at Bisley was in marked contrast to last year. It remained mostly dry during the daytime, so shooting was seldom disrupted, but the wind was often difficult and sometimes fierce, more reminiscent of spring or autumn competitions. All competitors, but particularly many from overseas, found scoring well a much more difficult procedure and the grumbles and groans could often be heard behind the firing point. The cool conditions meant that instead of barbeques it was beer and bar snacks most evenings. The one guaranteed barby - the annual Notts do on the middle Saturday, was well-attended but swiftly vacated by some in favour of the warmer Surrey Rifle Club.
In the Match Rifle meeting Richard Whitby was the only Notts. Shooter, and he came a creditable 33rd in the overall aggregate - the Hopton. In MR the competition is fierce and the technical ability required to shoot at 1000 to 1200 yards, with 1000 yards being ‘short range’, extremely high. So, achieving a top 40% ranking is therefore no mean feat.
In the target rifle there were few outstanding achievements at County team level, although the County ‘Red’ team did manage 6th place in the ‘Opening Shot’ competition. In the Queens Prize seven Notts. shooters made it through to the Second Stage, which I believe is a record. These were John Bloomfield, Sandra and Richard Hind, Sheila and William Mott (two husband and wife ‘pairs’ is certainly a ‘first’), Simon Shouler and myself. Of the seven only John Bloomfield and I made it through to the Final, where I was placed 45th and John 67th.
Special mention should be made of Rick Shouler’s achievement in winning the Champion of Champions competition. This is held between 10 pre-elected representatives from England, Scotland and Northern Ireland (why Wales weren’t there I don’t know). Anyway, Rick won beating strong contenders - including the Commonwealth Games (Pairs) Gold Medallist into 3rd place.
Individuals’ other scores and achievements (top 50 places and ‘Blue Riband’ competitions) are as follows:

I would be grateful for any contributions from others – particularly those who have had individual success, been on tour or who have had exchanges with overseas clubs.
